VMU (Velocity of Minimum Unstick) VMU is the minimum speed at which an aircraft can first lift off the runway during takeoff. It is determined during certification by gradually pitching the aircraft to the maximum achievable attitude during the takeoff roll. For geometrically limited aircraft, this occurs with the tail just touching or about to touch the runway. The speed at which lift-off first occurs in this condition is defined as VMU.
