The Ojibwe Word of the Weekend is giiwiizens, which is the Ojibwe word for boy. You’ll notice that this doesn’t follow the pattern of adding a diminutive suffix to “ikwe” (woman) to make “ikwezens” (girl). You do however see the diminutive suffix “-ens” at the end. We cannot tell you why man and boy don’t follow the same pattern as woman and girl. Languages have patterns, but they’re never as rigid as math.
