Wonderful celebration today of the matriarch of Auntie Maiki Aiu Lake's haumana. None other than 91-yr old Momi Aarona Kepilino. Hula Preservation Society recommended her for the Hula Grill's "I Ola Mau Ka Hula" award this year, and the gathering was a touching reunion of Auntie Maiki's students. Maddy Lam composed this song for Kahauanu Lake, as a gift to Maiki Aiu. This was first danced by April Peeples Chock and presented as a hoʻokupu to Maiki. She loved the mele and it became the signature song of her halau. This mele compares a sweetheart to the beautiful ʻāhihi blossom. The ʻāhihi, a low spreading shrub-like bush with a twisted trunk (Metrosiderous) is a form of Lehua. Lanihuli is the peak west of the Nuʻuanu Pali gap where the ʻāhihi grows profusely. With help from Mary Kawena Puku’i, Kahauanu composed this beautiful song for Maiki. At the time during the creation of this song, Maiki lived in Palolo Valley, so he compares her to “Lililehua”, the rain goddess of Palolo Valley. Maile Lei Maddy Lam wrote this song in one night at the request of Kahauanu Lake. When Aunty Francis Holt was the Aloha Week Queen, Hālau Hula o Ma‘iki was to do the show at the Waikiki Shell. Aunty Ma‘iki had planned for her dancers to do “A maile lei for your hair”. Mr. K. was not very fond of the song, so he asked his friend Maddy Lam to come up with a new song for the maile lei. She worked on the song all night. The next day, Aunty Ma‘iki choreographed the song and taught it to her dancers.
