The phenomenon where one side of the Moon always faces the Earth is called “tidal locking.” Tidal locking occurs due to the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon. Over a long period of time, the gravitational forces between the two celestial bodies have caused the Moon’s rotation to slow down until it became synchronized with its orbital period around the Earth. As a result, the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate it orbits the Earth, which is approximately 27.3 days. Th

What does tidally locked mean?It means the Moon rotates on its axis in the same time it takes to orbit Earth, so the same side always faces us.The “dark side” just means the far side of the Moon that we can’t see from Earth, not a permanently dark one. The Sun always lights up half of the Moon, and as it orbits Earth, different regions move into sunlight at different times.
