Mário José Gomes de Freitas Centeno (born 9 December 1966) is a Portuguese economist, university professor, and politician. From 2015 to 2020, he was Minister of Finance of Portugal in the government cabinet of Prime Minister António Costa of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS).

Foi ministro das Finanças de Portugal entre 26 de novembro de 2015 e 15 de junho de 2020 e presidente do Eurogrupo entre 12 de janeiro de 2018 e 13 de julho de 2020. É o atual 18.º Governador do Banco de Portugal.

Mário Centeno (full name Mário José Gomes de Freitas Centeno, 1966) was elected President of the Eurogroup on 4 December 2017 by the euro area finance minister. Since 21 December 2017 he also serves as Chair of the Board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism.

Mário Centeno received his PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 2000. He was Portugal’s Minister of Finance from 2015 to 2020 and Eurogroup’s President from 2018 to 2020.
