The Gamecocks' inability to capitalize on game-finishing opportunities cost them what could have been an all-time upset over No. 3 Texas A&M on Saturday. The team was shut out entirely in the second half and dropped their conference record to 1-7 on the season.
Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw three interceptions in the first half, put on a heroic performance over the final 30 minutes. He guided the Aggies to a 21-0 scoring run in the third quarter while throwing for 203 yards and three touchdowns.
It’s the biggest comeback in school history, eclipsing a 21-point rally by a Johnny Manziel-led team in a 52-48 win in the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Bowl over Duke. Entering Saturday, teams were 0-286 in Southeastern Conference play since 2004 when trailing by 27 points or more.
South Carolina suffered yet another defeat on Saturday, when the team blew a nearly 30-point lead against Texas A&M.
Beamer, who was initially rumored to be among the candidates for the open Virginia Tech job, reaffirmed his commitment to South Carolina last month and called the Gamecocks his "dream job" before saying he planned on helping the program get things back on track.
