Happy Gilmore 2's Adam Sandler has spoken out about the 'painful change' that was made to the movie after a beloved actor died before the film was released on Netflix.

Adam Sandler said he had to rewrite Happy Gilmore 2 following Carl Weathers ‘ death. The actor and comedian, who is reprising his role as Happy Gilmore in the sequel to his beloved 1996 sports comedy, recently told Collider that Weathers’ Derick “Chubbs” Peterson was planning to return for the new movie before he died last year at age 76 .

In 1996’s “Happy Gilmore,” Weathers played the golf mentor to Sandler’s Happy Gilmore. Sandler told Collider that Chubbs had a bigger part in the sequel when they were drafting the initial scripts.

OG Sandler fans will remember actor Blake Clark, who played the pierced Farmer Fran in 1998's The Waterboy. He appears in a similar state in Happy Gilmore 2 and is a regular in Adam's flicks. At the end of Happy Gilmore, Happy sees a ghostly vision of Abraham Lincoln, Chubbs, and the alligator who took his hand, waving to him from heaven.

“Carl Weathers had a massive part,” Sandler, 58, confirmed. Weathers, who died at age 76 on Feb. 1, 2024, played the one-handed Derick "Chubbs" Peterson — mentor to Sandler’s titular hockey player-turned-golfer — in the 1996 sports comedy.

Happy Gilmore 2 releases on Netflix on July 25, 2025, at 12 am PT. The film features Adam Sandler returning as Happy Gilmore, with a revised plot following Carl Weathers passing. The sequel includes new characters,
