Researchers at an artificial intelligence firm say they've found the first reported case of foreign hackers using AI to automate portions of cyberattacks.

A nthropic is scrambling to assert its political neutrality as the Trump administration intensifies its campaign against so-called “woke AI ,” placing itself at the center of an increasingly ideological fight over how large language models should talk about politics.

The attack involved hackers tricking Anthropic's AI tool, Claude Code. Around 30 companies, institutions, and agencies were targeted.

Researchers from Anthropic said they recently observed the “first reported AI-orchestrated cyber espionage campaign” after detecting China-state hackers using the company’s Claude AI tool in a campaign targeting dozens of targets. Outside researchers are much more measured in describing the significance of the discovery.

Anthropic is spending $50 billion on custom US data centers in Texas and New York, teaming with Fluidstack to boost AI compute, jobs, and domestic capacity.

But there's growing political backlash to the AI industry's data centers, with voters angry over rising electricity prices. Abigail Spanberger, who won last week's governor race in Virginia, promised to make the industry pay "their fair share" of higher costs.
