In 1949 during the Cold War, the US Air Force reactivated the base refurbished the runways, and extended to accommodate jet fighters as well as B-29 and B50 Bombers. The base was renamed Matagorda Island Air Force Base. The base was once again deactivated in 1975 after the Vietnam War.
