Extreme cold has settled on the Chicago area, making the job of firefighting harder than usual. Just such an example of such challenges came up Tuesday afternoon in the Pilsen neighborhood, where a fire broke out in a duplex house and sent a man to the hospital in critical condition.

Just before 9 p.m., Firefighters battled heavy flames and issues with frozen hydrants at the building in the 1600 block of West Cullerton Street. Six people escaped from their burning homes safely. The American Red Cross is working to assist the displaced residents during the extreme cold.

Two people were killed in a shooting in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood early Tuesday morning. Three people were shot just before 5 a.m. near 78th Street and Oglesby Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
