Prior to the disqualification of both McLarens in Vegas, Norris's position at the top of the F1 standings was much more secure. The Brit would have held a 30-point lead over Piastri, and a 42-point advantage over Verstappen. Ironically, Piastri is actually better off after the McLaren disqualification than before.
A stunning and potentially championship-altering development unraveled in the hours immediately following the Las Vegas Grand Prix early Sunday morning, as FIA stewards summoned McLaren drivers and championship frontrunners Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for a rear plank that was less than the required thickness.
McLaren have released a statement apologising to both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after the two drivers were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, following P2 and P4 finishes.
