The presence of National Guard troops in Washington, DC, is expected to expand Wednesday evening, according to a White House official, as President Donald Trump’s takeover of the city’s law enforcement continues to take shape.

On Tuesday night, more than 1,450 federal law enforcement officers and National Guard members patrolled Washington, according to a White House official. Forces made 43 arrests on Tuesday night -- nearly twice the amount they made Monday night.

The White House says federal officers arrested 23 people in Washington, DC, overnight and seized six illegal handguns, calling it "only the beginning."

The Trump administration announced an expansive review of some of the Smithsonian’s museums in an effort to ensure “alignment” with the president’s view of history.

The president signed an executive order this year ordering the removal of "improper ideology" from the museum system.

Three top White House officials said in a letter to Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch that the review aims to ensure the institution highlights "historically accurate" and "inclusive portrayals" of the country's heritage.
