BANGKOK -- Thailand, which has been under a caretaker government since last week, saw competing efforts to resolve its political crisis on Wednesday, as the country’s main opposition party agreed to support its rival to be the next prime minister while the party in power said it wants a new election.

BANGKOK (Reuters) -Thailand’s ruling Pheu Thai Party on Thursday said it would nominate its candidate ahead of a parliamentary vote for a new prime minister this week, a late move that could complicate a bid by the rival Bhumjaithai Party and its pact with the opposition.

The leader of Thailand's Bhumjaithai Party said on Wednesday he had enough votes to become prime minister after winning over the biggest group in parliament, as the ruling party moved to block his path by petitioning the king to approve a snap election.
