The Mets are acquiring hard-throwing closer Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, a day before the July 31 Major League Baseball deadline, the team announced Wednesday. The Cardinals get back three minor leaguers: shortstop Jesus Baez and right-handed pitchers Nate Dohm and Frank Elissalt.

Coming into the summer, improving the bullpen was a significant need for the Mets, and it has been one that was addressed and then some. New York started by acquiring left-hander Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles to give them a solid southpaw out of the bullpen,

First, the Mets obtained Rogers from the fading Giants for pitchers José Buttó and Blade Tidwell, along with minor league outfield prospect Drew Gilbert. Tidwell was at Triple-A Syracuse after making two starts and two relief appearances for New York this season.
