The US Food and Drug Administration plans to phase out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes in the US food supply due to health concerns, Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary announced Tuesday.

As part of the initiative, the FDA will set industry standards and timelines for transitioning to natural color alternatives.

Eight petroleum-based synthetic food dyes must be phased out of the American food supply and medications within the next year, according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Martin Makary.
