A crash involving a big rig on U.S. Highway 101 near South San Francisco caused a fuel spill and knocked out power to Caltrain overhead lines, authorities said.

A truck crash on Highway 101 early Thursday morning brought down power lines and spilled 160 gallons of fuel, causing major delays for Caltrain service between San Francisco and South San Francisco.

Motorists planning to travel on southbound Highway 101 between Brisbane and South San Francisco were advised to expect delays after a crash Thursday morning closed multiple lanes. An 18-wheeler struck the bridge railing along the right shoulder of the highway just before 5 a.

The early morning crash spilled 160 gallons of diesel fuel on the freeway and sent debris into nearby high-voltage power lines, cutting power to Caltrain.

Traffic is backing up Wednesday morning north of downtown Santa Rosa after a traffic light outage near Highway 101. The light at College Avenue near the highway overpass is out in all directions, and an eastbound lane is closed, according to a Press Democrat staffer in the vicinity.

Caltrain lost power Thursday morning from San Francisco to South San Francisco after a major truck crash on Highway 101 knocked down a fence onto power lines and spilled fuel, according to transit agency.
